He is responsible for adaptive optics and thermal compensation in LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). Rainer Weiss (MIT), Kip S. Thorne (Caltech) and Barry C. Barish (Caltech) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.”
